Howard and Alberta Harrell
This photos was taken of my father Howard J. Harrell and his first wife Alberta Harrell around 1935. They had one son Kenneth Eugen Harrell in 1936 and he died in 1937 at the age of 9 months. She died in 1954 of breast cancer. Her family the Coxes were one of this first families to be identified with the BRCA 1 gene mutation for breast cancer.

This photo was made around 1907. The children's mother Rebecca Harrell was pregnant at this time with her second son John Sherman Harrell Jr. and was therefore was not in the photo. Rebecca had John Sherman Harrell on September 11, 1908, she had my father Howard Jesse Harrell on February 28, 1913. She died in October of 1914. The home caught on fire and burned most of the photos, my father Howard was only one year old when she died, there were no photos of his mother and he died never knowing or remembering what she looked like. This photo tells me alot about my grandmother the children are nicely dressed. Goldie the older girl has a necklace and bracelet and is wearing stockings. The baby Fay in dressed nicedly and has little shoes, even though she is not yet walking. Chalmer the boy is wearing a dress and also nicely dressed. After my grandmother's death my grandfather John Sherman Harrell married Maude. She was a good stepmother and had eight additional children. My father never distinguished between half brother and sister, all the sisters and brothers were very close. These children of Rebecca Haines Harrel lived into their adult life and had children of there own, even though they tragically lost their mother of bleeding ulcers at an early age.
